King and Queen
1974
Ceramic, steel

Rising like ceremonial figures, King and Queen stand as monumental totems composed entirely of hand-formed ceramic elements assembled around a central steel core. Layered spheres, columns, and cubical forms stack upward with rhythmic precision, their surfaces animated by incised patterns and earthy glazes.

Created in 1974, these works reflect Dries van Engelen’s fascination with archetypal forms, ritual objects, and the quiet authority of verticality. The pieces balance fragility and strength: the delicacy of fired clay contrasted with their commanding scale and architectural presence.

The tallest figure measures 230 cm; its counterpart stands at 215 cm. Together, King and Queen form a paired presence—distinct yet inseparable—evoking guardians, sentinels, or symbols of timeless rule.

In very good condition with some small chips and one foot of the king is placed "loose" on the base.
